UAS tethering tech success

The world-first tethering of a UAS to a moving platform in Jaen, Spain, without the use of GPS or other satellite navigation system will have applications in future maritime and land surveillance, inspection and agriculture duties, among others.

The EC-SAFEMOBIL project, funded by the European Commission under the FP7 programme, has been researching the development of accurate common motion estimation, control methods and technologies for unmanned vehicle deployment in testing environmental conditions. 

The tethering of the UAS was completed in June at the ATLAS Unmanned Aerial Systems facility in Spain, owned by FADA-CATEC, and with the assistance of the University
