Skeldar V-200 selected for ESMA contract
UMS Skeldar will supply two Skeldar V-200 UAS to Nordic Unmanned to fulfil a European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) framework contract valued at €14 million, UMS Skeldar announced on 29 November.
Nordic Unmanned will provide emergency emissions monitoring and maritime surveillance services with the V-200 for EMSA and EU member state users for two to four years. UMS Skeldar and Norut will also be involved in the service provision.
In areas of dense maritime traffic, ship-generated harmful emissions can be substantial, with sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide and particulate matter all released into the atmosphere. In the EU, SOx emissions from ships are regulated, and monitoring the emissions from ship smokestacks with the Skeldar V-200 will support the enforcement of the directive with information to be shared among the relevant authorities via EMSA.
Potential areas of operation include all sea areas surrounding the EU or European Free Trade Association countries. If requested by governmental users, deployment could be extended outside EU adjacent seas.
The Skeldar V-200 could additionally be used on an emergency basis for a wide range of other ISR services including border control, search and rescue, pollution monitoring, detection of illegal fishing and drug/people traffic surveillance.
