Seaeye Sabertooth bags order
Modus Seabed Intervention has ordered the Seaeye Sabertooth hybrid autonomous/remotely operated underwater vehicle (AUV/ROV) from Saab, with deliveries to be made in the first quarter of 2016.
This marks the first order in a planned fleet of Sabertooth vehicles, due to arrive in the market in 2016. The order also includes a collaborative agreement between the two parties under which Modus will provide operational input for the future development of the vehicle.
The Seaeye Sabertooth will feature extended autonomous endurance and increased thrust, according to Saab. It houses a survey sensor suite that includes the Edgetech 2205 triple-frequency sidescan sonar, HD still and video cameras, RDI workhorse DVL and IXBlue Phins3 INS. It also uses the QINSy software package from Saab QPS.
The hovering hybrid AUV/ROV is a combination of Saab Seaeye and Double Eagle Sarov technologies, with a six degrees of freedom control system, long excursion range and deep water capability.
Agneta Kammeby, head of underwater systems, Saab, said: 'The choice of Seaeye Sabertooth by Modus for a future fleet of hybrid systems confirms that our ground breaking work with the hybrid AUV/ROV technology is now accepted on the market and we can continue to further develop this technology.'
Jake Tompkins, managing director, Modus Seabed Intervention, said: 'The acquisition of the first Sabertooth vehicle from Saab is the culmination of a two-year development and evaluation programme and we are delighted to both confirm this order and to also enter into a collaboration agreement. This differentiated dual role technology combined with our innovative operating methodologies will offer a new value proposition to the subsea market.'
