SAS 2017: USCG envisions UAS blend

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has made no secret of its interest in small unmanned aircraft systems (SUAS) for shipboard operations aboard its new National Security Cutters (NSC).

Initial evidence of this included a request for information (RFI) released in October 2013, with that interest reaffirmed in a subsequent RFI released in late September of last year.

Nevertheless, the USCG is not limiting its UAS vision to shipboard operations. In fact, senior leadership in 'the fifth service' envision the SUAS as one of two primary elements of future coast guard UAS operations.
