RN declares 700X NAS ready for action
A new UK RN unit to operate shipborne RPAS is ready for deployment.
Three flights in 700X Naval Air Squadron (NAS) have been established (Phantom Flights A, B and C) following ‘months of training on various systems’, the RN announced on 17 August.
Lt Cdr Justin Matthews, CO of 700X NAS, said: ‘We have two flights ready to deploy and a third to follow later in the year.’
The unit, which is based at RNAS Culdrose, operates the Puma RPAS that can be launched directly from a ship. The system comprises a lightweight airframe with onboard cameras and a ‘sophisticated’ flight system, the RN noted.
