Raytheon delivers MS(3) for ACTUV
Raytheon has delivered the Modular Scalable Sonar System (MS(3)) for DARPA's Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous TrailUnmanned Vessel (ACTUV) programme, the company announced on 18 November.
The MS(3) is a fifth-generation hull-mounted sonar system. The company has made the delivery under a subcontract with Leidos, whose prototype trimaran is designed to serve as the programme's unmanned vehicle.
MS(3) will be integrated into Leidos' trimaran, and will perform active and passive search and tracking, incoming torpedo warning, and small-object avoidance for safer navigation in an autonomous operating environment. Sensor data from the system will be used in the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) mission to help build a common operating picture.
Paul Ferraro, vice president, advanced technology, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, said: ‘MS(3) builds on a legacy of sonar expertise, integrating a host of capabilities in a single sonar system. MS(3) will provide DARPA with exceptional performance – from detection to tracking – from an unmanned platform.’
ACTUV seeks to develop an independently deployed, unmanned naval vessel that would operate under sparse remote supervisory control and safely follow the collision avoidance ‘rules of the sea’.
