RAF uses Leonardo C-UAS technology in R&D programme
Leonardo has delivered the first of four modular ORCUS C-UAS systems to the UK, to support the next stage of an RAF R&D programme run by the MoD Defence Equipment & Support Future Capability Group.
ORCUS is part of an extensive test and evaluation campaign, which aims to improve the RAF’s understanding of how it can employ technology in response to the threat posed by rogue UAVs.
The modular C-UAS system provided by Leonardo for the R&D study will allow the RAF to evaluate a range of capabilities, including advanced radar, EO and RF sensors plus an electronic attack countermeasure.
In due course, further systems will be integrated for testing and evaluation.
Currently under development for C-UAS, ORCUS will also provide a national standby capability for the RAF to support emergency services across the UK in crisis situations, Leonardo announced in a 3 September statement.
Leonardo is already under contract to deliver its modular and scalable C-UAS technology to the UK and Italian armed forces.
