Paris Air Show: Sense-and-avoid comes of age

Development is continuing on Honeywell Aerospace’s sense-and-avoid (SAA) system, with officials saying the final product would ‘probably be another two years away’.

Work on the project began in 2011 as the company looks to get a head start on its rivals, according to Howie Wiebold, Honeywell manager of business development, with industry anticipating a US FAA decision on integrating unmanned aerial systems into national airspace.

The FAA has since begun work on the Airborne Collision and Avoidance System for Unmanned Aircraft (ACAS Xu), to determine how best to achieve UAS separation.
