Northrop confirmed for DARPA UAV project

Northrop Grumman has been selected to develop a working demonstrator for DARPA’s Tactically Exploited Reconnaissance Node (TERN) programme, it was revealed in a statement issued by the US Department of Defense on December 24.

According to the statement, the TERN programme will ‘design, develop and demonstrate’ enabling technologies for a MALE UAV, together with a shipboard-capable launch and recovery system for use on smaller ships. 

The $93 million contract will focus on the design, construction and testing of a prototype TERN demonstration system.

An announcement in September by UAV specialists AeroVironment, the only other competitor for the TERN programme, revealed
