Neuron programme progresses
The Neuron unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) demonstrator has been successfully tested in a flight test campaign in Italy, it was announced on 25 August. The completion of the series of tests marks an important step forward for the programme.
The Neuron is a European full-scale technological demonstrator for UCAV technologies developed by a Dassault Aviation-led industrial team. The team also includes Alenia Aermacchi, HAI, RUAG, Airbus Defence and Space and Saab.
The tests took place at the Italian Air Force's Decimomannu air base in Sardinia, Italy. The aircraft completed a series of operational tests, including 12 sorties that verified the combat capability characteristics of the Neuron UCAV, along with its low infrared signature and radar cross-section. It flew missions at different altitudes and flight profiles against simulated air radar and ground-based radar threats, including a Eurofighter Typhoon.
The next testing phase will begin in the summer at the Vidsel air base in Sweden. The tests will verify the Neuron UCAV's low observability and weapon delivery from its weapon bay.
