MALE UAVs operating in Philippines; more expected

The US Embassy in Manila announced on 11 September that the US military had deployed ‘Gray Eagle unmanned aircraft systems’ - note the plural - to support counterterrorism operations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

‘Compared to current surveillance platforms used in the region, the Gray Eagle has a longer flight duration which will enable a larger area of reconnaissance and surveillance,' the embassy press release noted.

The MQ-1C Gray Eagle, manufactured by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI), is believed to be in use in Mindanao, where the AFP is currently battling Islamist insurgents in the city of
