IRIS eyes operational focus

Colombia’s indigenous IRIS tactical UAV, developed by the government-owned Corporacion De La Industria Aeronautica Colombiana (CIAC), is set to be delivered to the Colombian Air Force next year.

Two proof of concept air vehicles were flown in 2007 and with $1 million in funding from the state-run defence policy and manufacturing firm INDUMIL, the first prototype IRIS was flown in 2010.

CIAC was due to have produced six units by 2014 but the project ran into delays. A second IRIS was scheduled to have completed a four-flight trial programme by the end of 2015.
