India offers private sector UAV blueprints

India is one of the world’s largest importers of UAVs, but in an effort to boost its domestic industry and spur technological advances, the government announced in late September it had decided to share designs with private companies.

In addition, the authorities have relaxed joint venture restrictions on foreign companies in the hope that more collaboration will occur with local firms. Many military projects under the auspices of state-owned entities have not performed well in producing the equipment needed by India’s armed forces.

One of those UAV designs that could benefit is the Rustom from the Defence Research and Development
