German UAS plans affected by political manoeuvring

Plans by the German MoD to acquire an armed MALE UAV solution will be put on hold as an indirect result of trilateral negotiations in government to form a coalition, industry sources have revealed.

Negotiations regarding the procurement of such a UAV are expected to form part of a comprehensive agreement on a wide range of issues, sources informed Shephard.

Following Chancellor Angela Merkel’s election victory on 23 September, Germany’s largest political parties - the Christian Democratic Union, Christian Social Union and Social Democratic Party (SDP) which opposes arming of UAVs - are currently discussing the possibility of forming
