German Navy receives more Remus 100s
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) delivered additional Remus 100 UUVs to the German Navy in December 2020, working in collaboration with local representative J Bornhöft Industriegeräte.
The vehicles will be used to expand the German fleet of six Remus 100s, which are used in MCM operations.
The new UUVs feature enhanced modularity, an open architecture technology platform with advanced core electronics and endurance of up to 12 hours.
Shephard Defence Insight notes that Germany originally ordered the Remus 100 in 2012.
‘For the past seven years, the German Navy has been using these [UUVs] successfully for area search, debris field mapping, and topographic ocean floor mapping in water down to 100m,’ according to HII.
The UUVs are outfitted with side scan sonar, using sound to create images of the ocean floor and increasing search efficiency in low-visibility areas.
Germany is one of 12 NATO member countries, including the US, to operate REMUS UUVs.
