Escribano to develop UAV swarming system for Spain
The Directorate General of Armament and Material in the Spanish MoD has awarded Escribano Mechanical & Engineering a contract to develop an autonomous multi-platform UAV swarm system, as part of Phase II of the Rapaz programme.
The value of the deal and completion timeframe were not disclosed.
UAV swarms could be launched from the future VCR 8x8 Dragon armoured vehicle (pictured) to operate at 5-10km range, incorporating loitering or ground attack capabilities, Escribano noted in a 4 January statement.
The Long Range Intelligent Security System (LISS) would also be used for ISTAR and SAR, as well as humanitarian relief and environmental monitoring operations.
Escribano claimed that LISS as ‘the only drone swarm system that provides individual and group intelligence for the development of missions autonomously’, with human oversight from a single operator.
Rapaz seeks to evaluate UAV technologies and promote R&D collaboration with industry.
