The Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) has awarded the contract for the supply of Hermes 900 heavy fuel engine (HFE) UAVs to the Swiss Air Force.

The contract will be performed over a four-year period and follows an announcement made by the DDPS in June 2014 in selecting Elbit Systems as the preferred supplier for the UAS 15 new unmanned reconnaissance programme. The programme first began in 2011.

In a release Elbit said the $200 million deal will also include a ‘ground control segment’ for command, control and communications.

Bezhalel Machlis, CEO of Elbit Systems
