China’s unmanned plans for SCS

Unmanned technology is set to play a pivotal role in Chinese monitoring of the South China Sea, where Beijing has been robustly claiming territory and building military bases despite opposition from neighbours.

The first confirmation of UAVs operating from one of its military bases there occurred in late May. Satellite imagery revealed a HALE platform on the apron at Woody Island in the Paracel Island chain.

Fox News reported it as being a Harbin Aircraft Industry Group BZK-005 UAV, while another source described it as the Harrier Hawk II Air Sniper built by the Guizhou Aircraft Industry Corporation.
