China becoming global centre for consumer UAV production

Start-up firms in China are looking to tap into the success of established in-country UAV firms such as DJI, whose products account for 70% of the global civilian market, thanks to low manufacturing costs and cheap labour.

No official figures are available, but there could be several hundred such businesses in China, with the majority seeking to tap the lower end of the market.

The South China Morning Post quoted John Ma, a 22-year-old who arrived in Shenzhen with two friends to create a UAV business last year. Within four months they had sold 70 small craft for US$75
