Avalon 2015: IAI suggests new roles for Australian Herons

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) believes the expanded capabilities of the Heron 1 UAV operated by the Royal Australian Air Force can provide a way for the force to continue to use the platform and maintain the skill set it has developed through operations in Afghanistan.

Australia eventually leased four Heron 1 UAVs for operations which began in January 2010 and ended in December 2014, and is now returning two platforms to Australia.

While work is being done to expand potential areas of operation to maintain usefulness of the platform it can only be used at present at the RAAF Woomera
