AUVSI: UK awards Lockheed Martin $5m order for Desert Hawk III

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a $5.1 million contract with Lockheed Martin to increase its fleet of Desert Hawk III UAVs.

Having already supplied around 100 systems to UK forces as part of an urgent operational requirement for Afghanistan in 2007, Lockheed Martin intends to deliver the additional tranche of systems by the end of 2010.

Over the past few years, Desert Hawk III has been used to detect enemy combatants laying improvised explosive devices, conduct overwatch missions of friendly forces and provide target acquisition for indirect fire missions. However, the latest deliveries will include Lockheed Martin's latest
