AUVSI 2013: Seaglider acquisition adds to Kongsberg AUV offerings

Kongsberg has acquired the Seaglider AUV to add to its portfolio of unmanned maritime platforms.

Originally developed by the University of Washington, under an Office of Naval Research (ONR) initiative, the company purchased the technology in May to start the company’s Underwater Glider Systems unit.

The platform is designed for persistent monitoring tasks, including oceanography. Typically a system like this will operate a variety of sensors for tactical oceanography.

Rich Patterson, GM of the new company unit, explained to Shephard at the AUVSI Unmanned Systems conference, that the ONR required the Seaglider to have a 10-month at-sea endurance. To date,
