ASV, BMT partner on autonomous navigation
ASV Global is collaborating with BMT for a £1.2 million research project to enhance safe autonomous navigation at sea, the company announced on 10 April.
The Synthetic Imagery training for Machine Vision in Extreme Environments project will build upon ASV’s existing autonomous collision avoidance and path planning technologies. The project will use BMT’s REMBRANDT simulator to train and validate ASV Global’s vision algorithms to detect and classify objects at sea.
By using deep learning machine vision systems trained with a unique combination of simulated and real world data, the project will enhance situational awareness enabling USVs to operate in extreme and clogged marine environments.
The project will allow autonomous vessels to operate in the same way as traditional manned vessels at sea and will also open up new use cases and applications with the added use of BMT’s Search and Rescue Information System.
