US puts the brakes on Nicaraguan military training
With violence escalating between Nicaraguans and their government, the US has halted training the Central American nation's military and stopped delivering associated equipment.
The decision was taken in April as a direct 'response to the ongoing crisis,' DoD spokesman Johnny Michael said in 11 July email to Shephard.
A halt has also been placed on non-lethal equipment deliveries, including maritime and communications spare parts, that were purchased in fiscal year 2017 (FY17) under the previous counter narcotics authority. Instead, the US ambassador to the country has directed that forthcoming equipment is instead delivered to the embassy until the 'current situation resolves,' he added.
