The US Air Force (USAF) Life Cycle Management Center’s Agile Combat Support Directorate has awarded a contract to Spotlight Labs for testing of the company’s SPYDR device, the USAF announced on 2 April.

Spotlight’s SPYDR device has been designed to immediately alert T-6 aircraft aircrew of low oxygen in the bloodstream, which may allow them to take action to prevent physiological symptoms in flight. The new device is able to provide more accurate readings of oxygen levels.

The SPYDR device will be integrated into the pilot’s helmet directly behind the ears to collect performance data and monitor heart rate during flight. At certain thresholds, different alarms sound allowing the crew to take action.

Testing of the devices has already begun by T-6 instructor pilots and is scheduled to conclude at the end of April. If the tests are successful, SPYDR could be issued to the entire T-6 fleet.

Spotlight is providing 20 SPYDR devices as well as technical support during testing.
