Standing NATO Maritime Group Two holds exercise in Black Sea
Five ships in Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) took part in a joint exercise with Romania in the Black Sea on 30 March.
The Romanian Air Force and Navy took part in a simulated scenario which included guiding the SNMG2 vessels through an area suspected of having a high level of risk of sea mines.
The SNMG2 ships would then provide protection from other threats. Two MiG-21 aircraft belonging to the Romanian Air Force simulated several attacks against the vessels involved.
Rear Adm Paolo Fantoni, Commander of SNMG2, said: ‘Training exercises like the lead through in anti-mine warfare are critical and challenging: all opportunities like this one must be seized.’
Bulgaria, Canada, Italy, Romania and Turkey contributed one vessel apiece to the current formation of SNMG2.
