Rheinmetall Electronics UK and Latvia’s Lightspace Technologies will further develop Augmented Reality (AR) systems using multi-focal technology for use in Extended Reality (XR) and AR applications under an agreement announced on 14 June.
During 2023 the two companies engaged in proof-of-concept development that was demonstrated as part of the Rheinmetall offering at the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) Army Warfighting Experiment and to the British Army’s Armoured Trials and Development Unit.
Multi-focal solutions are designed to offer the ability to present images and information across multiple focal planes providing operational enhancements and remove the eye fatigue which can be induced by other single focal-plane solutions.
According to the companies, the work as part of the agreement “aims to leverage the respective strengths of each company to create cutting-edge AR systems, with development and realisation tailored specifically for defence and security applications”.
Rheinmetall will combine its experience in the global defence and security markets with Lightspace’s expertise in augmented reality technology, with the partnership seeking to develop solutions that enhance situational awareness and decision-making processes.
“We look forward to launching the productised version of this technology – ACE-AR at the UK MoD’s Defence Vehicle Demonstration exhibition later this year,” noted a statement from the two companies.
