HAL spin tests problematic jet trainer

After refining its jet trainer, HAL has restarted spin tests in hopes of readying it for Indian Air Force acceptance.

India’s delayed home-grown Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT), designed and developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for stage-two training of Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots, started spin flight testing in Bengaluru this week.

A HAL statement said: ‘The testing will be gradually progressed to assess the behaviour of the aircraft till six turn spins to either side to meet the targeted requirement.’

Flight testing of this HJT-36 Sitara, designed to replace ageing Kiran trainers, was put on hold after the aircraft encountered problems in spin test flights in 2016.
