New simulators for IAF
Two new Full Mission Simulators (FMS) designed for M-346 ‘Lavi’ trainer aircraft have been delivered to the Israel Ministry of Defense, Elbit Systems announced on 30 November.
The new simulators will be based at the Ground Based Training System (GBTS) centre at the Israel Air Force (IAF) Hazerim air base, where they will be part of a wider system used to prepare pilots and Weapon Systems Operators (WSOs) to fly 4th and 5th generation fighters, including F-16, F-15 and F-35.
The GBTS consists of multiple simulators that are connected to each other to create a joint network that provides a realistic flight environment for training. It allows personnel to practice unusual and in-flight emergency procedures; and at a more advanced level, to simulate complex combat scenarios both solo or as part of a formation.
Elbit Systems is part of a team responsible for delivering the GBTS centre to the IAF, along with Alenia Aermacchi, CAE and Sellex ES.
Both of the new simulators employ a real-image 360º display system, equipped with simulation models of actual weapons systems and high-fidelity Computer Generated Forces, which, working together, generate a wide range of immersive virtual combat environments.
