NATO launches Dynamic Mongoose
NATO has launched the Dynamic Mongoose anti-submarine warfare exercise, the alliance announced on 20 June.
The ten-day exercise concentrates on training aircrew and sailors in detecting and defending against submarines. The exercise will be conducted in the Norwegian Sea, across 14,000 square nautical miles.
Around 3,000 aircrew and sailors from eight nations – the US, the UK, Turkey, Spain, Norway, Germany, France and Canada - participated in the exercise.
Four submarines, four maritime patrol aircraft and nine surface ships from the US, Canada, Norway and Germany took part. This includes the Norwegian frigate HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen, the lead ship of the Fridtjof Nansen class of warships.
During the exercise, submarines transit from one point to another, with surface vessels trying to track them down and simulate an attack. Surface units also attempt to transit between two points while under submarine threat.
