GE to provide vessel propulsion systems for first two MARAD training vessels
The first pair of National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) training ships for the US Maritime Administration (MARAD) will include propulsion and power systems from the Power Conversion business of General Electric (GE).
The company announced a $40 million single-source contract on 23 November.
NSMVs are envisaged to provide at-sea training for cadets on operational vessels that can be tasked to conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, alongside naval assets if necessary.
Philly Shipyard was awarded a contract on 7 April 2020 to build up to five NSMVs. The first two vessels are scheduled to enter service in 2023 and 2024.
