FlightSafety to provide AHTS aircrew training services
FlightSafety Services Corporation was awarded a contract on 27 August for Aircrew Training Services (ATS) in support of the Advanced Helicopter Training System (AHTS) programme.
The indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract from Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) is worth $220.77 million for an initial five years.
One other bidder was considered for the contract.
FlightSafety is providing ATS for the new Leonardo TH-73A helicopter, including availability on 18 Flight Simulation Training Devices (FSTDs) from 2021 to 2026.
The TH-73A is based on the Leonardo TH-119 design. It ‘will provide a modern helicopter training platform that will serve rotary and tiltrotor training requirements into the foreseeable future’, said Capt Holly Shoger, Naval Undergraduate Flight Training Systems (PMA-273) programme manager.
TH-73A pilots will be trained at Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Milton, Florida.
Shephard Defence Insight notes that production of the helicopter was delayed initially by a bid protest, which was rejected in 2020. Leonardo is now clear to produce the first batch of 32 helicopters.
