Finland orders Saab’s virtual training simulators
Saab has signed a contract with the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command to deliver virtual simulators for marksmanship and basic combat training, the company announced on 11 March.
The €9 million order also includes associated maintenance support for the systems.
Under the contract, Saab will deliver simulators based on the weapon models used in Finland, and computers with software that creates the virtual environment and provides the basis for analysis after the training.
Åsa Thegström, head of business unit training and simulation within Saab’s business area Dynamics, said: ‘This order marks a big breakthrough for our newly developed Ground Combat Indoor Trainer. Finland will get a virtual training system that provides both width and depth, from basic training to advanced scenarios.’
First deliveries will take place in 2019 and the virtual training simulators will be in full-scale use in 2020.
The procurement is a part of the Finnish Armed Forces’ Training 2020 Programme.
