Australian, Chinese navies conduct exercise
The Australian and the Chinese navies have conducted a joint passage exercise off the coast of Queensland, the Australian Department of Defence announced on 2 January.
The exercise saw HMAS Darwin, an Adelaide class guided-missile frigate of the Royal Australian Navy, operate alongside the Chinese People’s Liberation Army-Navy (PLA-N) Escort Task Group 152.
The task group consists of three ships - the Jiangkai class frigate Yiyang, the Luyang class destroyer Jinan and the Fuchi class replenishment ship Qindaohu.
The PLA-N task group has visited more than a dozen countries in the final stages of its global deployment as it makes its way home following the completion of counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden in 2015.
Vice Admiral Tim Barrett, Australia’s Chief of Navy, said: ‘The Royal Australian Navy works with China and all of Australia’s regional partners to provide a stable and cooperative security environment and encourages constructive relations between all militaries in the region. Activities such as this provide both countries with an opportunity to operate in close proximity and increase their knowledge of each other’s operating procedures.’
