USS Bataan to undergo maintenance having ended seven-month deployment
General Dynamics NASSCO is to provide facilities and human resources to complete, coordinate and integrate ‘multiple areas of ship maintenance, repair and modernisation’ of USS Bataan (LHD 5).
The company was the sole bidder for the $106.92 million contract from the USN, the DoD announced on 5 August. If all options are exercised, the contract value will rise to $130.86 million.
Work on Bataan at Norfolk, Virginia, is expected to be completed by December 2021.
One of eight Wasp-class amphibious assault ships, USS Bataan has a full load displacement of 42,330t, maximum speed of 22kt and a range of 9,500nm at a cruising speed of 20kt.
The Bataan Amphibious Ready Group and embarked 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit returned to Norfolk (its home port) last month, marking the end of a seven-month deployment to the USN 2nd, 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation.
