US Navy to move railgun to major test range
The US Navy is gearing up to ship its electromagnetic railgun (EMRG) prototype to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico for its next test phase, according to service officials.
Moving the high-tech cannon to the massive army test site will allow the BAE Systems-built device to take longer shots than are permitted at its current home at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, in Virginia. The EMRG is designed to fire high-speed, precision-guided projectiles with an electrical pulse instead of the chemical propellant used by traditional guns.
