Ukraine naval mines ‘contributing factor’ in prevention of Mariupol takeover
The use by Ukraine of naval mines in maritime areas around Mariupol has been described as a ‘contributing factor’ in stopping Russia and Russian-backed forces from taking the city, according to a western naval officer.
In a bid to deter further Russian aggression following the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014, Ukraine opted to sow mines at key points to prevent a follow up attack on Mariupol.
