UDT 2016: Military research created commercial SonarBell

A UK-based company that has commercialised military sonar location research from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) say that their Sonarbell product could have more applications than initially envisaged.

The SonarBell, manufactured by Subsea Asset Location Technologies (SALT), is a passive sonar reflector that can be currently used as a marking solution where more expensive technologies such as active transponders limit the customer base.

Developed out of a programme to create a safer mine-marking system for naval EOD personnel, the system is compatible with hull-mounted sonar designed for mine hunting and side-scan devices to fisheries location and echo-sounders.
