Turkish industry unveils new USV
Turkish companies Ares Shipyard and Meteksan Defence on 28 October announced development of a new range of unmanned combat vessels called Ulaq.
Sida is the first vessel in the Ulaq family; made from advanced composite materials, the craft has a cruising range of 400km and top speed of 35kt.
Construction of the first prototype Sida USV is finished and the vessel is scheduled to be launched by December 2020, once outfitting work is completed.
Firing tests involving Sida are planned for Q1 2021, to include four Javelin and two Roketsan L-UMTAS missile systems.
Sida is designed to undertake maritime ISR missions as well as combat missions. Various EW payloads are available, according to Ares and Meteksan.
Selçuk Alparslan, general manager of Meteksan Defence, added: ‘I would like to state that we observe the maximum domestic [industrial] contribution while designing critical electronic systems on this platform.’
