US naval procurement commitments rise despite COVID pressures

Amid the pressures brought on by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and USN efforts to recapitalise in key capability areas, naval spending has increased in 2020 compared to the previous year with a $20 billion rise in executable contracts for the year to date.

While the USN concentrates on building up its fleet to meet the rising power of China and the USMC looks to restructure its composition through the Force Design 2030 plan, the emphasis on naval power projection has been brought to the fore.
