Russia strives to develop shipborne anti-air weapons

Developing and fielding shipborne anti-access/area denial systems has proven problematic

Today, the Russian defence industry manufactures a wide variety of land-based anti-air systems for domestic use and export, but it only has a limited offering of naval SAM systems. The reasons are prosaic — Moscow’s current military shipbuilding programme for large- and medium-size surface combatants is relatively modest and export deals are sporadic.

However, the Russian Navy is seeking to provide its new-generation warships with adequate protection against existing high-tech threats and to some extent is getting ready to respond to future airborne threats in the new era of Great Power Competition.
