Latest Tsirkon test shines more light on Russian hypersonics

​The hypersonic missile travelled at Mach 8 to strike a naval surface target at 450km range, but is Russia following a realistic timetable to bring it into service?

On 6 October, the Russian Navy Project 22350 frigate Admiral Gorshkov fired a Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile from the White Sea at a surface target in the Barents Sea.

Unlike previous occasions, in this case video footage (pictured) of the Tsirkon launch was released along with some details about the test. For example, the missile was launched at a target 450km away at a speed exceeding Mach 8.

According to the Head of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, the Tsirkon flew at a maximum altitude of 28km with a flight time of 4.5min. A direct
