Lürssen wins Australian OPV contract
The Australian government announced that prime contractor Lürssen had won a design and construction contract for 12 OPVs for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) under Project Sea 1180.
However, in a twist, different entities were appointed to build them as the government overrode existing commercial arrangements.
A government press release stated: ‘The navy’s OPVs will be the Lürssen design utilising ASC Shipbuilding in Adelaide for the construction of the first two ships.
'The project will then transfer to the Henderson Maritime Precinct in Western Australia where Lürssen will use the capabilities of Austal and Civmec to build ten OPVs,
