Insight: Will Royal Navy surface fleet jockey for future missile swaps?

With the UK MoD moving to further define the requirements for its Interim-Surface Ship Guided Weapon (I-SSGW) system in a 19 August contract notice, the future look and operational structure of the Royal Navy (RN) has been further crystalised.

A prior information notice in March indicated that first delivery of missiles would be required by December 2023. The contract would be for an initial four years, with the potential of up to nine option years to follow, and replace the ageing Harpoon Block 1C missile system expected to leave UK service in 2023.
