Independence-class LCS programme receives extra input from General Dynamics
General Dynamics Mission Systems is providing additional engineering and technical services for the Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) programme, under a $17.37 million contract from the US Naval Surface Warfare Center.
The company will support combat systems and command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C5I) work, as well as hull, mechanical and electrical equipment, components, software, training and equipment for the Austal-built Independence LCS variant.
Work under this contract is expected to be completed by May 2026, the DoD announced on 4 May.
According to Shephard Defence Insight, twelve Independence-class LCS vessels have been delivered to the USN out of 19 on order.
Each 127m-long ship displaces 3,100t. The trimaran hull design offers the Independence class a larger aft section that provides space for an additional aviation capacity and a substantial multi-mission bay area that can store 210t of equipment.
