Vessels from the US and Malaysian navies conducted bilateral training exercises in the South China Sea on May 10, as part of efforts to build deeper ties between the two nations.

The exercises involved the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group, currently deployed to the 7th Fleet area of operations to support security in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region, and air and naval elements from the Malaysian armed forces.

According to the US Navy, the strike group conducted a photo exercise (PHOTOEX), a 5-inch gun exercise, dissimilar air combat training (DACT) and finished with an expendable manoeuvrable acoustic training target (EMATT) exercise.
