IAI to deliver LRSAM systems to India
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) will supply the Barak-8 Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile System (LRSAM) for four Indian Navy ships under a $630 million contract announced on 21 May.
The contract will be carried out with Indian company Bharat Electronics (BEL), the main contractor for the programme.
LRSAM is an advanced air and missile defense system designed to protect against a variety of aerial, naval and air born threats. The system includes a Multifunction Surveillance, Track and Guidance Radar (MFSTAR), command and control system, launchers and missiles with advanced radio frequency seekers.
LRSAM was jointly developed by IAI and India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is currently operational with the Indian Air Force, Indian Navy and Israel Defense Forces.
The system has been recently tested in India as part of operational interception trial aboard an Indian naval vessel, demonstrating the system's operational capabilities in a representative scenario.
During the trial, the MFSTAR radar aboard the Indian naval ship identified and tracked the air-borne threat over its flight course. The data was sent to the command centre of the weapon system which launched the intercepting missile into orbit. The missile engaged the target, aligned its course, hit and destroyed the target.
