Egypt set to enlarge its Rolling Airframe Missile stocks
The US State Department has approved a potential sale to Egypt of RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) Block 2 naval missiles and associated equipment.
Raytheon Missiles & Defense will be the prime contractor on the estimated $197 million FMS deal.
Egypt requested 168 RAM Block II missiles plus shipping and storage containers; engineering, technical and logistic support; and operator manuals and technical documentation.
‘The proposed sale will support the Egyptian Navy’s Fast Missile Craft ships [such as the Ambassador IV class] and provide significantly enhanced area defense capabilities over Egypt’s coastal areas and approaches to the Suez Canal,’ the State Department announced on 16 February.
Egypt already operates RAM Block 1A (Shephard Defence Insight calculates there are 278 missiles in its inventory).
RAM Block II is designed to provide increased kinematic capability against highly manoeuvring threats and improved RF detection against threats with a low probability of intercept.
