DSEI 2019: SEA unveils trainable decoy launcher system

SEA has launched a trainable decoy launcher system (TDLS) to protect surface platforms from missile and torpedo threats at DSEI.

The company, partnering with Chess Dynamics and MASS (also subsidiaries of Cohort), is delivering the gyro-stabilised system which is capable of offering countermeasures to both sea skimming and ballistic trajectory threats.

As missile speeds are increasing, the window of time in which surface platforms can respond to a threat is decreasing. The TDLS uses a threat processing engine, which SEA says ‘can recommend and enact responses to a range of threats much more quickly than traditional systems’.

By using MASS’ collection of intelligence data, as well at its modelling and simulation capabilities, this new system will allow the operator to create a library of known threats in the area of operation, allowing for improved threat recognition and identification. Any new intelligence collected can be added to the existing library, allowing it to be analysed and new countermeasures to be made.

Steve Hill, managing director at SEA, said: 'The system offers a highly flexible, reliable and low through-life cost solution with tiered integration options.'

The system has support for decoy types such as chaff, flares, active rounds and programmable rounds. Other features of the system include configurable round loading, a small deck footprint, modular construction allowing for other types and calibres of payload to be used, and a low weight.
