MSPO 2016: Crimean maritime defence bolstered

30th August 2016 - 12:00 GMT | by Eugene Gerden in St Petersburg

RSS

Russia is taking steps to strengthen the defence of Crimean seaports with the installation of coastal missile systems along the entire 500-mile Black Sea coastline and by augmenting existing deployed forces.

The Crimean coast guard will also receive additional patrol vessels and equipment including up to ten Sobol-class vessels as well as other craft. The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) is also understood to be considering the purchase of modern tug-boats to assist in harbor safety and security operations.

Financial details of the planned purchases are not disclosed while other additional information has been deemed classified.
